This Week in Indian MRO
The clearest MRO development this week came from the land-defence sector. On 27 August, the Ministry of Defence launched a ₹472-crore project at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur to create additional overhaul capacity for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks.
Defence aviation produced a different but equally important lifecycle-support development. On 26 August, HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines signed the final contract with their SAFHAL joint venture for the new Aravalli helicopter engine. Significantly for MRO, the agreement covers not only design, manufacture and supply, but also lifecycle support for the engine that will power the future Indian Multi-Role Helicopter and its naval variant.
In the maritime sector, the Indian Navy announced that its second indigenous Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel, Nipun, would be commissioned. The vessel is designed for deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine-rescue support—capabilities closely connected with underwater inspection, repair and fleet sustainment.
Civil Aviation MRO
Current industry activity shows the scale of the domestic base already developing. Government-owned AI Engineering Services continues to operate a substantial maintenance network, and its procurement activity this week included inspection, testing and certification requirements for maintenance equipment at its Kolkata operation.
More broadly, India’s civil MRO ecosystem is increasingly moving beyond airframe maintenance into component and engine-related capability.
For example, GMR Aero Technic now reports more than 1,800 checks delivered in FY2025–26, over 30 regulatory approvals and more than 800 technical staff across its aviation MRO operation.
Recent agreements—although outside this week’s reporting window—also show where the industry is heading. GMR Aero Technic’s Honeywell licence enables repair and overhaul of seven line-replaceable units used on LEAP engines, bringing specialised component work closer to Indian operators.
The strategic challenge remains the same: India needs progressively more engine, component, avionics and heavy-maintenance capability, rather than relying mainly on line and airframe maintenance.
Defence MRO — Air
The most important development for defence aviation lifecycle support this week was the Aravalli helicopter-engine agreement.
HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines announced on 26 August that SAFHAL will design, develop, manufacture, supply and provide lifecycle support for a new 3,500–4,000 shp engine. It is intended for HAL’s future 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter and the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter.
The inclusion of lifecycle support is particularly important.
India has historically developed or manufactured aircraft while remaining dependent to varying degrees on overseas engine technology and support. A domestic engine programme can create downstream capabilities in inspection, repair, overhaul, testing, spares, technical documentation and engineering support.
It can also create specialist Indian suppliers around bearings, fuel systems, controls, hot-section components, instrumentation and test equipment.
This means the value of the Aravalli programme should eventually be measured not only by whether the engine is manufactured in India, but also by how much of its maintenance and overhaul chain can be controlled domestically…
Defence MRO — Land
The T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project at Jabalpur is the week’s strongest direct MRO story.
Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, part of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, will receive a dedicated ₹472-crore facility for overhaul of T-72 and T-90 tanks. Once operational, it is expected to process 80 tanks annually.
Tank overhaul goes considerably beyond normal field maintenance. It can involve major disassembly, inspection, restoration and replacement of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic systems before the platform returns to service.
The Ministry also expects the facility to create demand for mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components and assemblies from Indian suppliers and MSMEs.
That makes the project important for two reasons.
It increases Army readiness, but it also creates a permanent sustainment supply chain around India’s existing armoured fleet.
This is precisely how defence MRO becomes part of the military industrial base.
Defence MRO — Sea
The Indian Navy’s announcement concerning Nipun, the second Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel, has a particularly interesting relationship with maritime MRO.
The ship was designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited and is equipped for deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine-rescue support. Its systems include remotely operated underwater vehicles and specialised diving equipment.
Although Nipun is not itself a conventional repair shipyard, these capabilities form part of naval sustainment infrastructure.
Ships and submarines require inspection and intervention below the waterline. Underwater damage assessment, salvage, diving support and remotely operated inspection can allow problems to be investigated or addressed without immediately relying on conventional dry-docking.
Its role as a support platform for the Navy’s Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel adds another layer of lifecycle capability.
The larger point is that naval MRO exists at several levels:
Shipyard repair → Dockyard refit → Fleet maintenance → Underwater intervention → Submarine support.
India is gradually developing capability across all of them.
Industry & Policy
Two developments this week illustrate different approaches to strengthening India’s sustainment base.
The Jabalpur programme expands existing-platform MRO capacity. India already operates large T-72 and T-90 fleets, so the requirement is immediate and measurable.
The Aravalli programme represents future-platform lifecycle planning. By including supply and lifecycle support at the engine-development stage, the sustainment ecosystem can potentially be designed alongside the equipment itself rather than added after induction.
That is an important distinction.
Historically, imported platforms frequently brought imported maintenance dependencies with them.
A more mature model is:
Design the platform → design the supply chain → design the maintenance system → build the overhaul capability → train the workforce.
India’s defence industrial policy is increasingly moving in that direction.
What It Means for Indian MRO
This week’s developments reinforce three important lessons.
First, installed fleets create industrial opportunities that last for decades.
The T-72 and T-90 overhaul requirement demonstrates that defence platforms continue generating industrial work long after initial manufacturing or acquisition.
Second, future indigenous platforms should increasingly come with indigenous lifecycle ecosystems.
The Aravalli agreement is notable precisely because lifecycle support is included alongside development and manufacturing.
Third, MRO capability itself affects military readiness.
The Jabalpur project exists because annual overhaul demand exceeded existing capacity. Increasing maintenance capacity therefore directly affects how quickly equipment can return to operational units.
The broader objective for India’s defence and civil MRO sectors should increasingly be:
Maintain in India → Repair in India → Overhaul in India → Upgrade in India → Manufacture the replacement parts in India.
Once those capabilities exist together, MRO stops being merely an aftermarket activity.
It becomes part of national industrial capability.
