India MRO Moves Deeper Into Lifecycle Support

The strongest MRO signal this week came from civil aviation: Lufthansa Technik is evaluating Bengaluru for a possible expansion of its Indian operations. Lufthansa Technik already operates an Indian service centre in Bengaluru supporting airlines with spares, engineering, logistics, repair and overhaul access. (The Economic Times)

A second important theme was the continued movement towards greater domestic lifecycle capability in defence. New aircraft, weapons and naval platforms entering Indian service will eventually require maintenance, overhaul, upgrades, spares and trained personnel. This week’s procurement and industrial developments therefore matter to MRO even where the immediate announcement concerned acquisition rather than maintenance.

Civil Aviation MRO

The possible Lufthansa Technik expansion is particularly significant because it indicates continued international interest in India’s aviation-support ecosystem. The company provides aircraft maintenance, component support, engineering, logistics and access to repair and overhaul networks globally. Bengaluru is already one of India’s largest aerospace clusters, so deeper activity there could strengthen component repair, engineering and technical-support capability rather than merely adding line-maintenance capacity. This comes against a larger shift in India’s engine-MRO landscape. IndiGo’s July agreement with CFM International included plans for the airline to establish its own LEAP-engine MRO centre and secure long-term parts support. Reuters reported again this week that access to scarce engine-repair capacity remains a strategic concern for airlines. (Reuters)

For Indian MRO, the direction is important. Airlines are increasingly looking at maintenance capability as part of operational resilience rather than merely as an outsourced cost centre.

Defence MRO — Air

On 12 August, India’s defence ministry moved ahead with a major programme for 60 Medium Transport Aircraft intended to replace ageing Indian Air Force transport platforms. The programme is expected to be worth around ₹1 lakh crore. (The Times of India)

This is not an MRO contract by itself, but the lifecycle implications are substantial. A new transport fleet will create decades of demand for scheduled maintenance, engines, avionics, structural repairs, component overhaul, ground support equipment, technical documentation, spares and training.

How much of this support is established in India should therefore be watched almost as closely as the aircraft selection itself.

A second strategically important aerospace development came on 14 August when Reliance Industries announced plans to work with Rolls-Royce on development and manufacture of an engine for India’s future AMCA fighter programme. Reuters reported that the proposal includes exploration of an aerospace turbine complex in India. (Reuters)

For the MRO ecosystem, domestic engine design and manufacturing competence can eventually translate into deeper repair, overhaul, inspection and lifecycle-support capability. Engine sovereignty is therefore not only a manufacturing issue; it can also reshape the higher-value end of defence aviation MRO.

Defence MRO — Land

There was no major new Indian Army announcement during the period specifically centred on a land-platform overhaul or depot-MRO programme.

However, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth about ₹1,577 crore on 14 August with Tata Advanced Systems and NIBE for loitering-munition systems for the Army. The contracts fall under the Buy Indian category. (The Times of India)

The MRO relevance lies downstream. Growing use of indigenous drones, electronics, launch systems and associated ground equipment creates domestic requirements for diagnostics, repair, software support, batteries, sensors, spares and field-level sustainment.

Defence MRO — Sea

A useful illustration of naval sustainment came from current Indian Navy operations in the Gulf and Red Sea region. Reports on 11 August identified INS Aditya, a fleet replenishment and repair ship, operating with INS Trishul while escorting commercial vessels through waters affected by regional tensions. Its deployment highlights an important aspect of naval MRO that is easily overlooked: maintenance capability must sometimes travel with the fleet. Replenishment, repair, technical support and logistics at sea are essential to keeping ships operational during extended deployments.

India’s naval industrial base also continues to expand through new construction. GRSE launched the next-generation offshore patrol vessel Shruti on 11 August. Although ship construction is separate from MRO, every additional indigenous vessel eventually enters India’s repair, refit, dockyard and lifecycle-support system. (The Times of India)

The long-term opportunity therefore lies not only in building ships but also in supporting them through decades of operational service.

Industry & Policy

The broader industrial-policy environment remains favourable to domestic defence sustainment.

In Independence Day-related remarks, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India’s domestic defence production reached a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025–26, while Army ammunition indigenisation had reached 91%. (The Times of India)

This matters to MRO because domestic production and domestic sustainment reinforce one another. More locally manufactured components and ammunition generally mean greater domestic familiarity with processes, materials, suppliers, quality systems and technical documentation.

India’s defence policy has also explicitly identified development of the country as a global defence manufacturing and MRO hub as a policy objective. (Press Information Bureau)

What It Means for Indian MRO

This week’s developments reinforce three trends.

First, MRO is becoming strategic infrastructure. IndiGo’s planned engine centre and Lufthansa Technik’s interest in further Indian expansion demonstrate that access to repair capacity is increasingly being treated as a resilience issue.

Second, India’s defence MRO opportunity will grow as indigenous platforms multiply. New transport aircraft, drones, naval vessels and eventually indigenous fighter engines will need domestic support ecosystems extending far beyond the original manufacturing contract.

Third, the definition of MRO is widening. Traditional airframe, engine, vehicle and ship maintenance remains central, but future sustainment will increasingly involve avionics, sensors, software, electronics, autonomous systems, batteries, communications and data.

The long-term opportunity for India is therefore larger than reducing the amount of maintenance currently sent overseas. It is to develop a complete lifecycle-support ecosystem capable of supporting Indian equipment and, eventually, overseas customers.
